RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Home team Santos beat Fluminense 2-1 from the eighth round of the 2011 Brazilian Championshipon Wednesday. The win is Santos' second-straight as the team looks to recover after a slow start in the competition. Before the match began on Wednesday, the 19-year-old Neymar celebrated the birth of his son, Davi Lucca, alongside teammate and godfather of his son, Paulo Henrique Ganso.
Santos took an early lead in the 13th minute when Elano's free kick found a cutting Borges who headed the ball past keeper Diego Cavalieri and into the right side of the Fluminense goal. Borges' goal marks his 11th of the competition, replacing Flamengo's Ronaldinho Gaucho as the league' s leading scorer.
Fluminense responded in the 38th minute when Rafael Moura slammed in a header, leaping in the air to reach a crossed ball from Marquinho and tying the match.
However, Borges added to his collection of goals, scoring his 12th in the 41st minute when he gained control of an excellent pass from Arouca at the top of the penalty box and proceeded to angle the ball across the goal and into the left side of the Fluminense net.
The win improves Santos to fourteenth place with 21 points. The team still has two more make-up games to play before catching up to the rest of the teams. Fluminense remains stationed in ninth place with 25 points.
Santos will face its cross-town rival Sao Paulo on August 28 while on the same day Fluminense will confront its inner-city rival Botafogo. |
