1. At least 35 deaths in ten states are now blamed on hurricane Irene. The storm left a trail of misery from North Carolina to Canada, washing away roads, flooding homes and knocking out power. Damage is still being assessed. 2. Federal government has frozen future aid to tornado-ravaged Joplin, Missouri and other disaster sites, as it focuses on immediate help for victims of Irene. FEMA says aid to Joplin will continue for things like temporary housing, but help with long-term rebuilding projects will be put on hold.
3. Muammar Gadhafi's wife and three of his child are now in Algeria. The Obama administration says there is no indication that Gadhafi himself has left Libya. Meanwhile, fighting continues in the last stronghold of the Gadhafi regime.
4. The emperor penguin known to the world as “Happy Feet” is on his way back home to Antarctica. He was taken to a New Zealand zoo in June after he was found on a beach eating sand. |
