[13:26.45]Underline the key words while reading and retell the story to your partner. ;
[13:32.61] There Are Some Things You Can't Get Away Without ;
[13:37.97]I have a confession to make, ;
[13:40.77]and the sooner it gets out in the open,the better I'll feel about it. ;
[13:45.93]I don't drive a car. Americans are broad- -minded people. ;
[13:53.14]They'll accept the fact that a person can be an alcoholic, a dope fiend, ;
[13:59.49]a wife beater,and even a newspaperman, but if a man doesn't drive, ;
[14:05.65]there is something wrong with him. ;
[14:08.65]Through the years I've found it very embarras -sing to admit it to anyone. ;
[14:14.46]and my best friends tend to view me with suspicion and contempt. ;
[14:20.17]But where I really run into trouble is when I go into a store ;
[14:25.47]and try to make a purchase with a check. ;
[14:28.63]It happened again last week when I went to a discount house ;
[14:33.78]at a large shopping center in Maryland. ;
[14:37.44]I wanted to buy a portable typewriter, and the salesman was very helpful ;
[14:44.10]about showing me the different models. ;
[14:47.15]I decided on one,and then I said,"May I write out a personal check?" ;
[14:53.81]"Naturally,"he said kindly."Do you have any identification?" ;
[14:59.47]"Of course,"I said.I produced an American Express credit card, ;
[15:04.47]a Diner's Club credit card,a Bell Telephone credit card, ;
[15:09.48]and my pass to the White House. ;
[15:12.38]The man inspected them all and then said,"Where's your driver's license?" ;
[15:19.09]"I don't have one," I replied."Did you lose it?" ;
[15:23.44]"No,I didn't lose it.I don't drive a car." ;
[15:28.25]He pushed a button under the cash register, ;
[15:31.40]and suddenly a floor manager came rushing over.The salesman had now become surly. ;
[15:38.76]"This guy's trying to cash a check,and he doesn't have a driver's license. ;
[15:44.07]Should I call the store detective?" ;
[15:46.92]"Wait a minute.I'll talk to him,"the manager said. ;
[15:51.63]"Did you lose your driver's license for some traffic offense?" ;
[15:55.78]"No,I've never driven.I don't like to drive." ;
[16:00.49]"Nobody likes to drive,"the floor manager shouted. "That's no excuse. ;
[16:05.89]Why are you trying to cash a check if you don't have a driver's license?" ;
[16:10.40]"I thought all the other identification was good enough,"I explained. ;
[16:16.11]By this time the president of the store had arrived on the scene. ;
[16:21.96]Fortunately,he recognized my name and okayed the check. ;
[16:27.17]He was very embarrassed by the treatment I had received and said, ;
[16:32.43]"Come on,I'll buy you a drink." ;
[16:35.08]"I forgot to tell you, "I said."I don't drink either." ;
[16:39.98]This was too much,even for him,and he pushed me toward the door. ;
[16:46.19]"Get out of here," he said,"and don't come back!" ;

[17:42.96]"I want a record, dear,"she began. "One I heard on the radio this morning." ;
[17:48.52]"What was the record called?" Dolores asked, without much hope. ;
[17:53.72]The woman shook her head. ;
[17:55.72]"I don't remember. I should know it if I heard it,though. ;
[18:00.78]Perhaps if you play me a few records,I shall be able to pick it out." ;
[18:06.04]She settled herself more comfortably on her stool. ;
[18:09.54]"We have hundreds of records in stock," Dolores pointed out. ;
[18:14.10]"It would take a very long time to play you even a little of each. ;
[18:18.50]Could you hum it to me?"The woman shook her head again. ;
[18:23.41]"I can't even sing the National Anthem in tune. ;
[18:26.91]We should only get into a complete muddle if I were to start humming." ;
[18:31.17]She looked quite depressed, ;
[18:33.42]as if this reminder of her own lack of musical ability were the last straw. ;
[18:38.88]Then suddenly her face brightened. ;
[18:42.28]"I've just remembered something,"she said "It comes from a play. ;
[18:47.09]There's a girl who speaks very badly, if you see what I mean. ;
[18:51.29]But after a time she learns to talk well. ;
[18:54.39]Something about-- what do you call it?Phonetics." ;
[18:58.65]This was enough for Dolores. ;
[19:00.85]"If you ask me,it's from 'My Fair Lady', "she said. ;
[19:04.86]"That's it,dear. If you'd thought of it sooner, ;
[19:08.11]we wouldn't have wasted so much time. I suppose you are new to the job." ;

[19:20.88]Malc went to the Casualy Department of the hospital. ;
[19:24.88]There he was examined by the doctor. ;
[19:28.19]DOCTOR:Right.Just take off your jacket and shirt. ;
[19:31.89] And lie down on that bed over there... That's right... ;
[19:36.04] Now,just hold up your right arm, will you?... Does this hurt? ;
[19:41.40]MALC:No. DOCTOR:And this? MALC:Yes...a bit... ouch! ;
[19:46.66]DOCTOR:And do you feel anything when I do this? ;
[19:49.21]MALC:Yes,that hurts quite a lot. ;
[19:52.21]DOCTOR:And you don't feel any pain anywhere else? ;
[19:55.17] In your legs, for example? ;
[19:57.42]MALC:No,nothing. ;
[19:59.27]DOCTOR:Well,it's probably nothing serious. ;
[20:02.23] But I think we'd better have that shoulder X-rayed. ;
[20:05.28] We can't do that until the morning, though. ;
[20:08.63] So it'd be better if you stayed in hospital for the night... ;
[20:14.34]7.Read the following dialogue once. Underline the key words while reading ;

[20:36.32]Doctor:Oh?What are you worried about? Patient:I'm afraid that I'm very ill. ;
[20:42.42]Doctor:I'm sorry to hear that.Why do think so? ;
[20:46.83]Patient:Because I feel tired all the time, even when I wake up in the morning. ;
[20:52.13] I find it very difficult to do any work.I have no appetite. ;
[20:57.44] My wife cooks me delicious meals but I can only eat a little. ;

[21:29.43]I earn a lot of money but it's difficult work.I'm always afraid of making a mistake. ;
[21:36.64]Doctor:I see.Please take off your shirt and lie down on the couch. ;
[21:42.04]Patient:Yes,doctor. ;
[21:44.35]Doctor:Well,there's nothing very much wrong with you,I'm glad to say. ;
[21:49.35] You're working too hard and worrying too much.Do you take much exercise? ;
[21:55.96]Patient:No,doctor. I never have enough time for exercise. ;
[22:00.37] I start work very early in the morning and finish late in the evening. ;

[22:13.53]Doctor:I can,but I'm not going to.You don't need medicine. ;
[22:18.89] You need advice. Don't work so hard. ;
[22:23.24] Too much work is bad for you.Don't worry about your work. ;
[22:28.55] It's silly to worry. Take regular exercise. ;
[22:32.80]Patient:But I may lose my job,doctor!It's hard to get a job like mine. ;
[22:38.91]Doctor:Then get an easier one,even if you earn less money. ;
[22:43.87] Which would you rather have,health or wealth? ;
[22:48.82]Patient:You're right, doctor.It's more important to be healthy than wealthy ;

[23:39.83] Text A A Pocketful of Pigs ;
[23:44.04]Once there was no money. ;
[23:47.09]If people wanted to get something, they had to give something. ;
[23:51.65]This is the way it used to be. ;
[23:54.00]"I will give you my cow for your pig," a man would say. ;
[23:57.86]"I'll give you my bowl if you give me a shirt "another would say. ;
[24:02.41]"Here are seven oranges for one fish." ;
[24:06.27]"Will you give me a chicken for a bag of corn?"People had to trade things every day ;
[24:13.27]They had to give a thing to get a thing because there wasn't any money. ;
[24:17.63]But they had to work out a good trade,one that came out even. ;
[24:22.84]What could you get for two chickens? ;
[24:25.59]Were three bags of apples a good trade for two bags of grapes? ;
[24:30.19]Or one bag of apples for a little butter? ;
[24:33.85]What was an even trade?It was hard to know. ;
[24:38.15]And it was too hard to carry around all the things for trading. ;
[24:42.21]People had to use too much time getting things they needed. ;
[24:46.41]So they thought of a new way to trade. They thought of money. ;
[24:51.42]Money could "stand for" apples,or bowls,or pigs. ;
[24:56.13]And a pocketful of money was better than a pocketful of pigs. ;
[25:00.78]With money,it was not so hard to trade. Everyone could use money. ;
[25:06.54]The man who needed a pig could buy it with money. ;
[25:10.14]The man who sold the pig could keep the money until he needed something. ;
[25:15.65]People could work for money, ;
[25:17.75]and people buy things with the money they got from work. ;
