THE HAGUE, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Roger Federer grabbed his second title at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam after beating Juan Martin Del Potro 6-1, 6-4 in the final on Sunday in Rotterdam. The match was a replay of the 2009 US Open final, the only Grand Slam final won by Del Potro. This time however there was no doubt who was the strongest. Federer put on an impressive and stylish performance in the Ahoy arena.
The number one seed from Switzerland dominated his Argentinian opponent (3) from the start, with an early break in the second game, and eased to 6-1 in the first set. The second set was without breaks after four games, but Federer broke Del Potro again to take a 3-2 lead. In contrast, Del Potro did convert none of his seven breakpoints.
Federer moved on to win the second set 6-4, claiming his second title in Rotterdam after his first title in 2005. The Swiss legend, current number three of the world, captured his first ATP title of 2012 and the 71st of his career.
The arrival of Federer in Rotterdam was worthwhile for the organization led by tournament director Richard Krajicek. The ATP 500 event attracted a record of almost 116000 spectators. The record was held by the 2005 edition, the last time Federer was present.
"I hope it does not take another seven years before I come back again," the 30-year-old winner reacted. "But if it means I am still playing seven years from now, that would be nice." |
