DAMASCUS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Syria reportedly accepted Tuesday a six-point plan by Kofi Annan, the joint special envoy of the UN and Arab League (AL) for Syria, to end the year-long violence, according to Annan's spokesman.

The spokesman said in a statement that the Syrian government had written to Annan accepting his six-point plan endorsed by the UN Security Council, which incudes commitments to ending violence, allowing humanitarian assistance and protests.
Annan viewed the development "as an important initial step that could bring an end to the violence and the bloodshed, provide aid to the suffering, and create an environment conducive to a political dialogue that would fulfill the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people," the statement read.
