Promoted Frankfurt remains unbeaten at Bundesliga BERLIN, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Newly promoted Eintracht Frankfurt kept their unbeaten streak alive as Alexander Meier's brace was enough to come back to win 2-1 over Freiburg in the sixth round of Bundesliga on Sunday. The second-placed Frankfurt is now close on Bayern's heels owing to their neat two-point gap.
From kick off, Freiburg defended deep to frustrate the hosts that were in search for gaps to develop their short passing game.
As the game progressed both sides were able to implement their strategies to stage an evenly balanced match.
Frankfurt's Takashi Inui almost opened the scoring at the 27th minute when his shot from 16 meters was blocked by Freiburg's goalkeeper Oliver Baumann following a one on one.
Seconds later, the visiters' Daniel Caliguri pulled just wide from 14 meters to find only the outside of the net.
Five minutes into the second half, Freiburg shocked the hosts as Max Kruse poked home a failed clearance attempt inside the box.
Yet Frankfurt was able to increase their efforts to reward themselves with the equalizer through Alexander Meier, who showed all his skills, controlled Bastian Oczipka's cross to slot home with a turn-shot-volley from 16 meters into top left at the 68th minute.
Frankfurt pressed for another goal and it was again Alexander Meier who marked the decider five minutes later, when he headed home a corner by Oczipka from central position.
Freiburg remained unimpressed but they were unable to overcome Frankfurt's defence for the second time.
Also on Sunday Clinical Mainz shocked harmless "Wolves" 2-0 to steal three points at Volkswagen Arena. Junior Diaz and Adam Szalai scored the goals for Mainz at the first half. |
