Inter beat Catania to maintain pressure on Juventus ROME, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Inter beat Catania 2-0 at home on Sunday to keep in touch with Italian Serie A pacesetters Juventus. Inter went ahead in the 28th minute when Antonio Cassano converted from close range and Rodrigo Palacio made the points safe five minutes from time.
Andrea Stramaccioni revealed his tactical revolution as a new-look Inter beat Catania, but warns not to look at the Serie A table yet.
"Antonio Cassano certainly gave an important contribution, but I think this Inter represents all the players," he said after the 2-0 result with goals from FantAntonio and Rodrigo Palacio.
"I am happy with the defensive solidity shown by the side, as we worked hard for these results and it shows. We allowed little to Catania, who have some very dangerous forwards and midfielders."
With the win, Inter were still four points behind Juventus who beat second-placed Napoli 2-0 on Saturday.
Roma pulled off an impressive 4-2 comeback win as they recovered from conceding two early goals to down Genoa.
Juraj Kucka and Bosko Jankovic putt Luigi De Canio's side 2-0 up within a quarter of an hour, but Roma were back on terms before half-time thanks to goals from Francesco Totti and Pablo Osvaldo.
Osvaldo's second gave the Giallorossi the lead for the first time the 55th minute and Erik Lamela completed a 4-2 victory late on.
Cagliari put their off-field woes to one side as they climbed out of the Serie A relegation zone with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bologna.
Parma got a much-needed 2-1 victory over the ten-men of Sampdoria to move away from the relegation zone and up to mid-table.
Udinese had started the better of the two teams but the complexion of the game changed after half an hour when Danilo was sent off following his second yellow card. However, Pescara could not take advantage and instead it was Maicosuel who pounced on a mistake by Pescara midfielder Manuele Blasi eight minutes after the break to guide the hosts to victory.
Chievo and Fiorentina could only score once apiece in a pulsating game at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, with both sides wasting chances to win.
Cyril Thereau gave Chievo the lead in the 17th minute, but Gonzalo Rodriguez equalised less than a minute later. The closest either side came to winning it was when Luca Toni hit the post for Fiorentina just before half-time, but despite the chances, the game ended all square at 1-1.
Atalanta came from behind to beat fellow strugglers Siena 2-1 at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, leaving their opponents six points behind them and at the bottom of the league.
Palermo continued their steady recent improvement under Gian Piero Gasperini after picking up a point in the 0-0 home clash with mid-table Torino, although it was not enough to lift the Sicilian outfit out of the bottom two. |
