Cavalieri set for Brazil debut(在线收听) |
RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 20 (Xinhua) -- Fluminense goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri will represent Brazil for the first time in Wednesday's Superclassic of the Americas decider against Argentina in Buenos Aires. Speaking after the team's final training session in Sao Paulo before departing for Argentina on Tuesday, Brazil coach Mano Menezes confirmed the 29-year-old would start at the Bombonera Stadium.
"It's going to be Diego Cavalieri," Menezes responded when asked who had been chosen in goal.
The 29-year-old has been the standout goalkeeper of Brazil's Serie A championship this season, playing a key role in Fluminense's march to its second title in three years.
His berth in the starting line-up comes at the expense of Botafogo's Jefferson, who was Brazil's captain in September's first leg, which Brazil won 2-1 in Goiania.
Cavalieri said the match would be "the most important of his life".
"I believe that everything happens at the right time," said Cavalieri, who has both an Italian and Brazilian passport.
"You have to work hard and keep focused for opportunities to arise. I am aware of the responsibility I have been given and I'm ready to take on the challenge." |
