Julian Assange is calling on the United States to "end its witch hunt" against Wikileaks. The Wikileaks founder has made his first public statement since taking refuge in Ecuador's embassy in London two months ago. He's also called for the release of Bradley Manning, he's the man accused of leaking classified documents to Wikileaks. The Taliban is claiming responsibility for a roadside bomb that's killed three New Zealand soldiers in Afghanistan. They were on patrol in the northeast of Bamyan Province when their convoy was hit by the blast. Two other New Zealand soldiers were killed in a gunfight in Bamyan in early August.
The prime minister is expected to announce more money for private schools. Julia Gillard will outline the government's plans for a new funding model for school students in a speech later this morning. It's all part of the government's former response to the Gonski Review into school funding.
Firefighters in Brisbane have worked throughout the night to bring a bushfire in the city's northwest under control. It started as a controlled burn near the army base at Enoggera, but quickly jumped containment lines yesterday afternoon. Back burning saved several homes that were being threatened by that blaze.
And Gaddafi loyalists are being blamed for two car bombs that killed at least two people in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. At least four others were injured in the blasts. One bomb exploded near the Interior Ministry, the other was close to a military academy. |
