 The Prime Minister has cut short her overseas trip after the deaths of five Australians in Afghanistan. Julia Gillard will be briefed today on the hunt for the rogue  Afghan who shot dead three soldiers and injured two others. In a separate incident, two more Australians were killed in a helicopter crash.

 
 
 
Two men have died in hospital following a shooting in Sydney's west last night. Police say the men were sitting in the car in south Worthwentville when they were approached by a stranger who started firing at them. The injured driver tried to flee, but lost consciousness and crashed into a nearby house.
 
 
 
Hopes are fading for more than 90 asylum seekers still missing after their boat sank off the coast of Java. Australian Maritime Safety Authorities said fifty-five people have been rescued.
 
 
 
In what's believed to be an Australia's first, a Catholic priest has been charged with failing to report the alleged child sex offences of another priest. Hunter Valley priest Tom Brennan has been charged with fourteen offences. Some of them relate to his time as a Catholic high school principal in Newcastle in the late 1970s.
 
 
 
In Louisiana, 50,000 people have been told to leave their homes amid fears that a dam is about to burst. It's the result of three days of heavy rain dumped by tropical storm Isaac.
