英闻天下——120 China to Survey Diaoyu Islands: Spokesman(在线收听) |
Chinese authorities are planning to survey the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea as part of a program to map its territorial islands and reefs. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the move is aimed to "safeguard China's marine rights".
The first stage of the island surveying and mapping was launched in 2009.
Work to monitor islands located within 100 km of the coastline has been completed, according to a document from the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation.
The second stage will cover islands including the Diaoyu Islands.
Relations between the two East Asian neighbors have plunged since the Japanese government purchased some of the Diaoyu Islands from their private owner last September.
China has issued several statements, reiterating its sovereignty over the islands and adjacent waters.
Japan has scrambled fighter jets several times to follow China's surveillance ships and flights flying over the region.
Earlier, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying has met with Kenji Kosaka, a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
China's Foreign Ministry said that China and Japan have maintained communication on how to settle current disputes at various diplomatic levels. |
