英闻天下——269 The Beijing Citizens' Lunar New Year Gala(在线收听

One of the best performing arts venues in the country, the National Centre for the Performing Arts, has been graced by some of the best artists in the world. But this year, ordinary people have the opportunity to bring their talents to this grand stage in the second "Beijing Citizens' Lunar New Year Gala."

Guo Yuliang from the National Centre for the Performing Arts, organisor of the Gala Party, says everyday people who are passionate about life and the arts are best equipped to make the "Beijing Citizens' Lunar New Year Gala" a smash.

"We have a chorus, we have solos, and we have dances, operas, instrument playing, even poem recitations. Nearly 1,400 citizens altogether will display their talents here during the four-day gala. Besides, we will have a raffle-drawing segment from time to time mainly to add some more happiness to the festival."

In less than a month after the theater started to accept registrations for performances, more than 5,000 people ages three to 87 signed up for more than 400 performances. Now 90 high quality performances have been chosen, and the theater is providing free professional guidance to ensure their quality.

"For example, we'll see a Tibetan dance in a moment called 'The Eagle on the Snow-capped Plateau.' Before they come to the stage, we had professional choreographers and dancers to coach them. In this way we hope the performers can improve their ability and continue enjoying the benefits of the performing arts."

"The Eagle on the Snow-capped Plateau" is a dance by 12 Tibetan boys and girls who survived the 2010 earthquake that hit Yushu County in northwest China's Qinghai Province. For the past three years, they have been living and studying in Beijing. Fourteen-year-old Dansong Kanzhuo introduces the dance the group will perform.

"Our dance 'The Eagle on the Snow-capped Plateau' depicts the vigor of the Khampa men and the beauty of the Tibetan women."

The general director of the "Beijing Citizens' Lunar New Year Gala" says in addition to performances by ordinary citizens, the theater has also invited some well-known artists to perform and interact with the citizen performers.

The "Beijing Citizens' Lunar New Year Gala" features 30 different performances on stage each day from February 11th to the 14th. For the public, this will be a huge feast of the performing arts.

  For CRI, this is Xiangwei.
