英闻天下——339 Government Formation in Limbo in Italy(在线收听

Election results in Italy have left the country in a political stalemate with Pier Luigi Bersani saying the country is in a dramatic situation.

Bersani's center-left coalition has narrowly won the recent election in Italy's lower house, and must now form a new government.

Even though the center-left coalition won the election, they fail to control the Senate.

Bersani needs to either ally with Silvio Berlusconi's center-right party or the Five Star Movement's Beppe Grillo to form a majority.

Political researcher, Francesco Ang-helone, says the election results show the Italian people's strong distrust and disappointment towards the government.

"The slogan of Populism is easily favored by people, but the government indeed has serious moral issues. People now are fed up with the financial crisis and corruption. They voted for Grillo to express that they have had it enough. In spite of Populism, traditional government is doing poorly in understanding the people's difficulties and needs."

Anghelone says any alliance they make with another party is likely to bring friction to a coalition government.
