英闻天下——344 South Africa Rape Triggers Outrage(在线收听

The gruesome gang-rape and murder of a teenage girl in South Africa has triggered unprecedented uproar against long-existing sexual violence in the country.

It has been reported 17-year-old Anene Booysen was badly mutilated and left for dead near Cape Town by her attackers, one of which was a former boyfriend.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world.

Police figures show that 64-thousand cases were reported last year.

Patrick Godana, national manager of the Sonke Gender Justice Organization, says sexual violence seems to be especially bad in South Africa.

"If you compare South Africa to other countries in the world, women and girls are not safe in our country; even our children are not safe in our country. This has been substantiated by evidence from the medical research council, that there is high rate of violence against women and high rate of rape against women and children in our country. Without being ashamed of being a South African, we are having a problem."

Though women and children in rural areas are more at risk of rape and murder than city dwellers, research shows gender-based violence is everywhere.

The case is being compared to the rape and killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus which caused huge demonstrations in India against gender-violence.
