英闻天下——360 Gbagbo Defends His Innocence(在线收听

Laurent Gbagbo, former President of Cote d'lvoire has appeared at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, to hear if he will be tried on charges of crimes against humanity.

Gbagbo faces four charges, including murder and rape, following Cote d'lvoire's Presidential election in 2010, which sparked a 4-month long civil war.

He told the ICC in the Hague, he always fought for democracy and respected the Constitution.

"A democratic approach is the respect of the legal instruments, notably the greatest of all is the Constitution. He who does no respect the constitution is no democrat. Madame President, is it because I have respected the Constitution that I have been brought here? Then, I'm here but I'm counting on you."

Prosecutors must prove Gbagbo ordered his forces to commit human rights violations which killed some 3-thousand people and uprooted a million others from their homes.

The 67-year-old claims he is innocent.
