英闻天下——492 Australia to Improve Energy, Defense Ties with China(在线收听

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is putting out a new call for stronger energy cooperation and defense ties with China.

Among her proposals are potential three-way military exercises among China, Australia and the United States.

"We share interests in aid and development in the Pacific, growing naval cooperation, and skills and experience in disaster relief and recovery. These will be a major asset to our region. In the coming decade our cooperation will continue to grow. Over time we would like to see this extend to trilateral exercises including the United States."

Gillard is also calling for a more broad-based economic relationship and more diversified investment.

"Our work together in clean energy will also expand. Our cooperation in designing emissions trading is already invaluable. Our trade in gas is of huge long-term significance. This is a clean energy trade which is literally fueling growth."

The comments from Australia's prime minister have been made during a stop in Shanghai.

As part of the stop, Gillard has confirmed the Chinese government has authorized the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group and the Westpac Banking Corporation will be among operations allowed to be involved in the direct trading of the Chinese yuan and the Australian dollar.
