英闻天下——516 DPRK Continues Celebrations Despite High Int'l Tensions(在线收听

While the international tensions are riding high, inside North Korea, celebrations are still taking place in the lead up to next week's anniversary of former leader Kim Il-Sung's birthday on April 15th.

A giant flower show has opened in Pyongyang, featuring thousands of flowers known as Kimilsungia.

"The situation is now very complicated but families are still full of laughter and great construction work, including apartment blocks, are still being built on the socialist construction sites. April 15, the 'Day of the Sun', is the supreme holiday of our people. Because our people miss our fatherly leader, we put on this show."

Small replicas of North Korean missiles are also scattered among the floral arrangements.

North Korea has not specified any plans to fire a missile or carry out another nuclear test, but has warned that it has its weapons on standby and is prepared to strike if provoked by the US and South Korea.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry has arrived in South Korea.

He's just completed a joint news conference with his South Korean counterpart, saying the world will not accept a nuclear North Korea.

Kerry has also met with South Korean President Park Geun-hye, with the two discussing ways to defuse tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Kerry also plans to visit China this weekend, as well as Japan.
