英闻天下——532 Maduro Bans Opposition Rally(在线收听) |
Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro is accusing the opposition of planning a coup against him following his narrow election victory. At least 7 people have been killed across the country during violent clashes at opposition protests.
"I can announce here: we have defeated a coup. But they are going to continue to destabilize. Today I declare the coup defeated."
Opposition leader Henrique Capriles called on his supporters to protest this Wednesday after the electoral authority turned down his demand for a recount.
However, Maduro says he will not allow the opposition to go ahead with the planned rally in the centre of Caracas, saying it was time "for a tough hand."
Senior government figures have also raised the possibility of legal action against Capriles.
For his part, Capriles says the government was responsible for the violence as it sought to avoid a vote recount.
Capriles also earlier repeated his call for peaceful demonstration.
Maduro has won by a 1.6 margin over Capriles on Sunday's election with the opposition alleging fraud.
Maduro is set to be sworn in on Friday. |
