海地因巴西飞机事故暂停航班 SANTO DOMINGO, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Most of the flights to and from Haiti's main airport, in Port-au-Prince, were still suspended Monday due to the accident of a Brazilian military airplane last Sunday, which blocked the landing strip. Reports from Port-au-Prince said the Haitian authorities only allowed the traffic of small airplanes, while hundreds of passengers were stranded for the second day at Toussaint Louverture International Airport, after American Airlines announced the cancellation of its flights between the United States and Port-au-Prince.
"The airport is open, traffic is allowed but only one part of the landing strip is being used," the airport spokesperson Max Justin told the press, adding that for now only small aircraft flying to the Dominican Republic were operating.
A military airplane from Brazilian Air Force (FAB), a Boeing B707 with 131 Brazilian soldiers and 12 members of the crew, had a breakdown last Sunday in the middle of the landing strip with a damaged undercarriage, after the pilot performed an emergency maneuver.
The accident occurred when one of the airplane's motors burst into flames during the lift-off operation. The fire was quickly controlled by the fire brigade.
No passengers were injured. They are members of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (Minustah) from the Brazilian contingent, and were departing for Manaus, Brazil. |
