智利边界争端即将服从国际法庭的裁决 SANTIAGO, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Chile will abide by any verdict issued by The Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) on its border dispute with neighboring Peru, Foreign Minister Alfredo Moreno said Wednesday. "Chile is a country that respects international law, not only because it has to and has pledged to do that, but also because it is the most suitable action for a small country that has to defend its interests and views," Moreno told local radio.
Despite most Chileans' opposition to a possible unfavorable verdict, Moreno said the government would be willing to accept the outcome.
"What benefits Chile's interests most ... is the respect for what we have voluntarily chosen," he added.
He stressed that Chile "is not interested in obtaining anything from a neighboring country."
Peru and Chile are awaiting the ICJ verdict, to be issued in the coming weeks, on a 2008 lawsuit filed by Peru requesting its maritime border with Chile be clearly defined.
The dispute reflects the complex bilateral ties of two countries since they fought each other in the Pacific War from 1879 to 1883. |
