BOGOTA, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A police officer was killed and another seriously injured by a homemade grenade launched by members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebel group in the northwest city of Quibdo, police said Monday. Jesus Paredes, chief of police in the department (state) of Choco, where Quibdo is located, said the attack occurred Sunday night when FARC rebels lobbed a grenade at the police station, then escaped on motorcycle.
Police are searching for the suspects, he said.
Paredes said that the head of the local highway police, Luis Lopez, was killed in the attack, and a female police officer was seriously injured and taken to a hospital in nearby Medellin.
"Approximately at 8:09 p.m. local time (01:09 GMT), FARC terrorists threw a homemade explosive device that exploded inside the municipal transit office, where there were police personnel," said Paredes.
The explosion caused damage to the office, which was the target of another attack eight months ago.
The government of President Juan Manuel Santos is currently in peace talks with the FARC leadership in Havana to end five decades of armed conflict, but neither side has agreed to a truce. |
