1. President Barack Obama is defending the government’s collection of massive amounts of information from phone and internet records as a necessary defense against terrorism. Speaking in California, the president said "nobody is listening to your telephone calls".

 

　　2. A Texas woman has been arrested for allegedly sending ricin-laced letters to President Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Authorities say the suspect, Shannon Richardson, originally claimed that her husband was behind the crime.

 

　　3. Tropical storm Andrea has been bringing wind and rain in the Carolinas, causing thousands of residents to lose power. Forecasters issued flood watches across much of the Carolinas, as well as some tornado watches.

 

　　4. The US economy added 175,000 jobs in May, a pace that shows the steady progress with the economic recovery. But the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.6% because more people were trying to find work.
