During a visit to a new refugee camp in Lebanon on Friday, the head of UN’s refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, says "massive support" is needed for Lebanon and the Syrian refugees who are fleeing there.

"You can imagine that what happened today in Lebanon, if it would be in a country like Germany, it would mean 18 million refugees, if it would be in the United States it would be 56 million refugees, this is the proportion of the problem, so obviously massive support is needed for the Lebanese people and massive support is need for the Syrian refugees," Antonio Guterres said.

More than two million Syrians have fled their homes because of the country’s conflict, seeking shelter in neighbouring countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq. The UN refugee agency says in a report that at least half of the Syrian refugees, more than a million, are children.

Of those, some 75 percent are under the age of 12. The report says these children are growing up in fractured families and missing out on education. They are fast becoming primary providers for families who lack resources for basic survival.
