The government will today announce the terms of reference for the Royal Commission on child sexual abuse. It's expected to create a special investigation unit to work with police to fast-track (咳,excuse me) individual cases. 

 

 

Coordinated bomb attacks have killed at least 100 people and injured many more in Pakistan. In the city of Quetta, bombs struck a marketplace and a snooker hall. Another attack on the city of Mingora targeted a religious gathering.

 

 

A new study has found that a staggering 50 per cent of the world's food goes to waste. The British Institution of Mechanical Engineers says the waste is caused by poor storage, strict sell-by-dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness.

 

 

Australia will have a strong showing at this year's Academy Awards. Hugh Jackman has been nominated for best actor in Les Miserables. And it adds to his best nomination yesterday. The musical is also in line for best picture. Other big contenders are Steven Spielberg's presidential drama Lincoln, starring best actor nominee Daniel Day Lewis and Ang Lee's Life of Pi.
