And the powerful lobby group Manufacture Australia has chosen controversial former underwear Queen Sue Morphett as its new chairwoman. And she resigned last year as the Chief Executive of Pacific Brands where she axed 1,800 jobs and moved production to China to save the company. Ms Morphett will now take up the cause of struggling manufacturers in a new campaign, starting next week. Top of her list is a call for cheaper energy. “How do we ensure that there is a local market for energy and as well as an export market for energy and that is used appropriately to be able to support our local businesses, but also sort of encouraging investment? First going offshore where there is much cheaper energy. If we can put in those correct policies and if we can build appropriate skill sets, then we can definitely encourage investment here in Australia.”

Now to the markets.
There was little movement in the US. The Dow was steady. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 fell just a touch. The FTSE was up just by seven.
West Texas Crude is trading at 92 US dollars a barrel. Tapis Crude is at 115 and gold is at 1593 US an ounce.
The Aussie dollar is buying 103 US cents, 79 Euro cents and there it goes against the pound 69 pence sterling. |
