 The new Pope has appeared on the balcony at the Vatican to loud cheers from the assembled crowd. He is Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio and was elected was elected by cardinals on the second day of the conclave. He is the first Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church, and he'll be known as Pope Francis I.

 
A group of asylum seekers is being taken to Christmas Island after being rescued by the navy. A customs plane spotted the 77 people of Ashmore Island yesterday. They've been throwing into the water after their boat capsized. The Maritime Safety authority says the navy is confident everyone who was on the boat has been rescued. There are no reports of injuries.
 
The prime minister will continue to defend the government's crackdown on visas for foreign workers at a Union Summit today. Julia Gillard insists the system is being roted, and the number of temporary workers from overseas is growing too fast. She'll single out the IT industry as a main offender. The Opposition has accused the prime minister of demonizing foreign workers.
 
The Northern Territory's ousted chief minister will arrive home today. Terry Mills was dumped late yesterday while on a trade mission in Japan. He's been replaced by Adam Giles, who's become the first indigenous head of government in Australian history. Mr.Mills is expected to touch down in Sydney this morning.
