On the 50th anniversary of the major land rise petition, the prime minister says he wants to see the vote on recognition in the next parliamentary term. But he says Tony Abbott is stalling. Mr Abbott says in principle everyone agrees a referendum is needed and it's Labor that's holding the process back. Emergency services are attending an incidence at the US Embassy at Yarraluma in Canberra. A car has crashed into a gate and police and fire crews have blocked off nearby roads. One of the Sydney radio hosts behind last year's ill-fated royal prank is suing her employer. Mel Greg has lodged an application with FairWork Australia, claiming Southern Cross Austereo failed to maintain a safe workplace. Nurse Jasitha Seldana committed suicide after taking a call from Ms Greg and her fellow presenter.
And Australia has won a test, a toss and chosen to bat on day one of the first ashes test against Australia at Trent Bridge. It's a surprise, though, 19-year-old Ashton Agar has been named to make his debut.
