The ongoing standoff in Ukraine represents the divide between popular hopes of joining the European mainstream, and political pressure to move closer to a Russian-led customs union.

To understand the situation in Ukraine, we are joined on the phone by Feng Shaolei, the Director of the Center for Russian Studies at East China Normal University.

Q1. Welcome, Mr. Feng. The peaceful protests have evolved into a violent nationwide movement against the authorities. What do you think are the social and political factors that have led to this?

Q2. The opposition demands the president resign and refuses to talk until their demand is met. What do you think are the possible solutions to the political standoff?
