The Japanese cabinet is scheduled to approve three security-related documents, to bolster its military forces and raise its profile.

The new mid-term defense strategy guidelines include a budget of 240 billion US dollars, with provisions made for five years from April 2014. The program stipulates that considering the situation of the Diaoyu Islands, the military deployment over the country’s southwestern islands will be strengthened. A longer National Defense Program Outline lays out policies and strategies for the next decade. And the first-ever National Security Strategy calls for the abolishment of Japan’s "three principles" on arms exports.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the documents marked a "historic move". Some analysts say the three documents are actually targeted at China.
