Leading the news this morning. Parts of Washington DC are in lockdown this morning after a man shooting at the Navy Yard in that city. 13 people including a gunman are died. Police have identified the gunman as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis from Fortworth Texas. They’re still searching for a possible second shooter. UN weapons inspectors have concluded that sarin gas was used on a large scale in last month’s chemical attack in Syria. The attack on a rebel held area in Damascus killed at least 1,400 people. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says the report makes for chilly reading.
Australia in the year Ita Buttra has criticized the lack of woman on the Coalition’s new frontbench. Julie Bishop is the only woman in Cabinet. Mr. Buttra says it’s proof a glass ceiling does still exists and she suggests a quota to get more women into the ministry.
Engineers in Italia have successfully lifted the cruise ship Costa Concordia from rocks 20 months after ran aground. It’s one of the largest salvages ever undertaken. 32 people died when the ship ran aground off the Tascon Coast in January last year.
And Scottish comedian and actor Billy Conalley has undergone surgery for prostate cancer. He’s also been diagnosed with the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. A spokeswoman for the 70-year-old says the surgery was successful and Conalley has fully recovered. |
