Despite a quiet day of trade, the Australian share market managed to hit a five-year high with energy stocks in the lead. By the close, the All Ords was up a third of a per cent, as was the ASX 200 index. To the Movers. And Leighton holdings jumped more than 3 per cent and was among the best performers, as was oil and gas construction company Worley Parsons. Going in the opposite direction, the Newcreat, the gold miner and News Corp also gave backs of substantial ground.The banks were lower, too. National Australia Bank of two thirds of a per cent.
Across the region, it's a mixed session. Japan's Nikkei has closed down a quarter of a per cent.
The Australian competition watchdog says a global auto parts price-fixing cartel has driven up the cost of cars locally. U.S. authority has thanked the ACCC for its part in breaking up the cartel which it says has cost U.S. consumers 50 billion dollars.The ACCC has launched proceedings in Australia against Japanese subsidiary Yazaki which it alleges increased the price of Toyota parts and several other companies are under investigation. |
