China has urged Japanese leaders to learn from post-war Germany in dealing with historical issues and wartime atrocities. Foreign Ministry spokeswomen Hua Chunying said Germany and Japan’s approaches have been vastly different. In particular, she pointed to a historic visit in 1970 by German Chancellor Willy Brandt to a monument in Poland honoring the Jewish victims killed by Nazi troops.

"The kneeling-down of the German chancellor Willy Brandt won the forgiveness, respect and trust of the world for Germany. The reconciliation between France and Germany has brought European integration and peace and prosperity to the European continent for more than half a century. But, in sharp contrast, Japanese leaders have not reflected upon their history of militaristic aggression. Instead, they have flagrantly visited the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan Class A war criminals from World War Two." said Hua Chunying, Spokeswoman, Chinese Foreign Ministry.
