Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich has called for an emergency session of parliament next Tuesday, as escalating anti-government protests grip the country.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have shown mixed responses after four-hour talks with President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday evening. Oleh Tyahnybok asked demonstrators in Kiev for several more days of a truce, saying the president has agreed to ensure the release of dozens of detained protesters and stop further detentions.

Yet another opposition leader, former boxer Vitali Klitschko has said negotiations had achieved little. Interior Minister Vitali Zakharchenko has issued a statement, guaranteeing police would not take action against the large protest camp on Independence Square. On Wednesday evening, the opposition had given the government a 24-hour ultimatum to meet their demands.
