One of the three largest museums in China-the Nanjing Museum-is hosting an exhibition themed on horses to usher in the Chinese New Year. Antiques made from a variety of materials demonstrate the evolving history of the relationship between man and horse. And the 55 artworks on display here span a period of 1,500 years. In Chinese culture the horse is auspicious, but combined with other zodiac animals it has historically taken on more specific meanings. Highlights at the venue include eight horse paintings by Ignatius Sickeltart, who took the Chinese name Ai Qimeng and worked as a royal painter in the Qing Dynasty court. Every picture is of a life-sized horse, and this is the first time ever for them to be exhibited
