 Polls have closed in Thailand in a general election that was boycotted by the opposition and disrupted by protests. Anti-government activists forced some polling stations in Bangkok and the south to close, but voting elsewhere across the country went ahead without incident. The Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's party is likely to win, but the outcome of the vote could push Thailand deeper into political turmoil. 

 
Sea Shepherd Australia says one of its ships has collided with a Japanese whaling boat in the southern ocean. The captain of the Bob Barker Peter Hammer-stedt says his vessel received some damage when the Japanese ship crossed its bow today. The Australian government is preparing a briefing on the claim. 
 
A 41-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a woman and her two children in suburban Brisbane. Residents heard screams ringing out through the Karina neighbourhood before emergency crews arrived at the family's home. They found a 39-year-old woman, her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son with multiple stab wounds. They were all taken to hospital in a serious condition.
 
And some of Australia's brightest medal hopes have arrived in Sochi for the winter Olympics amid tightened security. The Australian team has been banned from leaving the Olympic zone.
