Authorities warned 9,000 people could be in danger as tropical cyclone Ita hurtles towards the far north Queensland coast. The category 5 system is stronger than cyclone Yasi which caused widespread devastation back in 2011. Now the system expects to make landfall this afternoon, somewhere between Cape Melville and Cook Town. Police fear a three-year-girl who went missing from her home near Bangdaburg in southern Queensland may have been abducted. Chloe Campbell went missing from her family home in Childers between mid-night and six yesterday morning. She was last seen wearing yellow pants and a white shirt.
An Australian orion aircraft has detected another signal that could be from the missing Malaysian Airline plane's black box recorder. Retired Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston says the accoustic data will need further analysis, but the new signal appears to be from a man-made source.
The Immigration Minister Scott Morrison says some asylum-seekers could be temporarily re-settled on Nauru if they are found to be refugees. Nauru finalized about 60 asylum-seeker claims within a month. Mr. Morrison says he's also in talks with Cambodia as a potential re-settlement location.
And hundreds of people gathered in Brisbane overnight in memory of the murdered French student Sophie Collumbay. The 21-year-old's body was found in a Brisbane park two weeks ago. Crowds packed Brisbane's King George Square before marching to that park for a candlelight vigil. |
