The rain is beginning to ease along the Queensland coast as tropical cyclone Ita boost further out to sea. A cyclone warning's in place for communities from Sarina to Yeppoon in central Queensland. The category One storm has caused widespread flooding and many people are still without power. The Council on the Aging is warning raising on pension age could result in many older Australians ending up on unemployment or disability benefits. Treasurer Joe Hockey has hinted the government may lift the retirement age to 70 and change the way pensions are indexed.
There's been a record rise in support for the Greens and a slump for the Coalition in the latest Fairfax&Nielsen Poll. The Coalition is trailing Labor 48 percent to 52 in the two-party-preferred vote. The Greens' primary vote is up to a record 17 percent.
Overseas, a massive fire in Chile has killed at lease a dozen people and destroyed 500 houses in the port city of Valparaiso. Strong winds fueled the blaze which raced across 700 hectares of forests in inter-residential areas. More than 1,000 firefighters have been battling the inferno.
And the world's leading climate science body says urgent global action is needed to life temperatures rise to a maximum of two degrees celsius. The latest report from the inter-government panel on climate change has found greenhouse gas emission have reached unprecedented levels despite efforts to reduce carbon emissions. |
