Dialogues
A. How Can I Get to the Harbor?

Mark, a foreign sailor, is going back to his ship after he did some shopping in the city. But he is lost and can't find the way back to the harbor.
Mark: Excuse me. How can I get to the harbor, please?
Man: Go straight on until you come to a stop sign. That's the second turning on your right. The stop sign is on the corner. Turn right at the stop sign and you'll be on Beijing Street. Go along it for a few minutes and then take the next left turning. The passenger terminal is straight ahead, right in front of you.
Mark: Let me repeat. That's the second right and next left turning. And how long is it going to take me to get there?
Man: About fifteen minutes.
Mark: Is there any bus going there?
Man: Yes, but you've got to change lines. First you take No.2 bus and it will take you to the railway station.
Mark: Where shall I change the bus?
Man: At the railway station, you change to No.15 bus, which will take you right to the harbor.
Mark: Thank you very much. That's very kind of you.
Man: Don't mention it.

B. How Can I Get to the International Hotel?

Mr. Green is a tourist from the USA. After he walked around, he was puzzled and couldn't find the way to his hotel.
Green: Excuse me, officer. Can you help me?
Policeman: Sure.
Green: Where's the International Hotel?
Policeman: Well, the International Hotel is that way. Look at this map. You are on Tianjin Street.
Green: Yes, how can I get to the hotel?
Policeman: You should keep along this street, walk two blocks and take the second turning on the right at the traffic lights, then you'll see a petrol station. The hotel is over there, on the right.
Green: Well, sorry, it's all too complicated for me.
Policeman: In that case, you can take a taxi from the opposite side of the street.
Green: That's a good idea. Thanks.
Policeman: You're welcome.

Passage You Can't Miss It

Last summer my brother and I stayed for a week with some friends in Boston. That was our first trip away from home and we wanted to see something of Boston's historic places. One morning we started out to look for a famous church. We stopped a stranger and asked, "How do we get to the Old North Church?" "Go three blocks and turn to your left," he said. "You can't miss it." So we walked three blocks and turned to our left, but the church wasn't there. We then asked a second stranger. He said, "Go three blocks and turn to your left. You can't miss it." But again we couldn't find the church. Finally we asked a third stranger. "Go three blocks and turn to your left. You can't miss it." This time we found the church, but we wondered if everything in Boston was three blocks and a left turn away. Just then somebody walked over to us and said, "Excuse me, where is the post office? Can you tell me?" "Go three blocks and turn to your left," my brother replied. "You can't miss it."
