Since its establishment 65 years ago, the Chinese Navy has been speeding up its process of modernization, both in terms of the quality of its equipment and the skills of its personnel. 

Liaoning, the nation’s first and only aircraft carrier, has been in active use for 19 months and undergone 17 naval tests. It’s now in the northeast Chinese port city of Dalian to begin a comprehensive round of maintenance. 

Meanwhile, China’s biggest missile-equipped destroyer, the "Kunming", was commissioned one month ago. The ship belongs to the new generation of China-made missile destroyers, that strengthens the Navy’s capacity for air and naval defense in the region. Participating in international peacekeeping has also become an important task for the Chinese navy. 

Currently, 16 Chinese vessels are stationed across the world in non-combat missions.
