Six bodies were recovered overnight on Thursday, taking the death toll to 181, with 121 people still missing. The number of survivors remains at 174.

According to an agreement reached earlier between relatives of those on board and the government, rescue and search operations will shift to salvaging the ferry on Friday, and underwater search will be suspended. But some relatives opposed the plan.

Search operations were hampered Thursday by tidal currents which were faster than expected. Only 15 bodies were retrieved that day, compared to the 38 bodies found on Wednesday.

The Chinese Embassy to South Korea says the body of another Chinese passenger has been recovered, raising the death toll of Chinese nationals to three. The fourth Chinese, a high school girl, remains unaccounted for.

A ferry crew member has meanwhile revealed that she and her colleagues were "under orders" to abandon the ship when the accident occurred. The captain and two crew from the ferry face charges of negligence, and have a state-appointed attorney to represent them.
