Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has discussed the recent face-off between Chinese and Vietnamese ships in the South China Sea with US Secretary of State John Kerry in a phone call. 

Wang Yi urged caution in any comments and actions related to the dispute. Speaking at a daily press briefing, spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying said that Wang Yi urged Kerry to be objective. Tensions rose in the South China Sea last week when Vietnam dispatched six vessels to deliberately ram into Chinese government ships soon after a Chinese oil rig arrived at the site. From May the 3rd to the 7th, 36 Vietnamese vessels, including armed ships, reportedly rammed Chinese vessels more than 170 times. Vietnam also placed many fishing nets and large obstacles in the water, posing threats to navigation.
