There is no mistaking yet. She is ready to mate. Finally, the lover/ unites a bit briefly. After two months, the breeding season is over. It is time for the long track back to their southern feeding grounds, but the females carrying the next generation of nomads, and fighters. In the Falklands too, the mammoth gladiators are turning away from their battlefields and the spectacular exodus must now begin.
For the young, on these bleak southern shores, it is the season of abandonment. With barely a backwards glance, the starving elephant seal females desert their giant three-week-old babies on the shore.
The males, utterly stunt, have nothing to do with their young.
With this abrupt winning, the pups make their first forays into the shallows. They, too, will return to these shores after a thousand mile journeys.
The rockhopper parents also take lead of their young, heading back into the war with the joy of the creature, returning to its elements |
