In southwest Yunan province, the blaze at Anning, which began last Wednesday, has been mostly brought under control after over ninety hours. Firefighters are now struggling to put out a new fire which broke out on Saturday. A further 300 soldiers and four helicopters have been sent to help with the efforts.

"This is normal wood. Since there hasn’t been a fire here for many years, the vegetation is pretty good. The thick layer of rotting vegetation has given us many difficulties." Zhang Hongshun, head of Forestry Division, Kunming Armed Police, said.

Meanwhile, another 300 soldiers have been sent to the other fire that broke out nearby.

"This new fire at the town of Qinglong began on Saturday. So far the blaze area is not large. It’s expected to be brought under control on Monday. We’re working on that." Zhang Zhiguang with Forestry Division, Kunming Armed Police, said.

About 30 kilometers away is Kunming, the capital of Yunan. Residents there have been suffering from dense smoke caused by the fire.

The disaster has affected an area 560 hectares, and required over 5,000 people to be brought under control.
