CCTV9英语新闻:埃及总统选举投票时间将延长一天(在线收听) |
Egypt’s Election Commission has extended polling for the country’s presidential election by one day. According to the state-run MENA news agency, voting will now enter a third day on Wednesday. The decision followed a lower-than-expected turnout in the two-day vote that was originally due to end on Tuesday at 10 p.m. local time.
Egyptians began voting on Monday at 9 a.m. local time, in the first polls since former Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the military.
Ex-army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who led Morsi’s overthrow, is poised to score an easy win over his sole rival in the race, leftist leader Hamdeen Sabahy, who came third in the 2012 presidential election.
About 54 million Egyptians are eligible to cast their votes at polling stations in the country’s 27 provinces. Official results are expected on June 5.
