Connery’s acting career really began to take off in 1959, after several years in British TV and films. Twentieth Century Fox Studios offered him a contract, and Connery made several films in Hollywood. When the contract was up, he was cast as the lead in a spy movie called Dr. No—and Bond, James Bond, was born.

“We all knew this guy had something,” Producer Harry Saltzman would recall. “We signed him without a screen test. We all agreed, he was 007.”

TIME FOR A FAMILY

Connery married Australian actress Diane Cilento in November 1962 while he was filming his second Bond film. After their honeymoon, the actor returned to the States for a flood of publicity. He thrived on the attention.

In 1973, 10 years after their son Jason was born, Connery and Cilento divorced. In 1975, Connery married French-Moroccan artist Micheline Roquebrune.

By this time Connery had made a total of six Bond pictures, and fans were in a frenzy. Once, he caught a photographer snapping a photo of him in the restroom. Connery now shrunk from the spotlight. He retreated from Hollywood, moving his family into mansions in England and Spain. It was more than a decade before he reluctantly agreed to reprise his Bond role one last time, in 1983’s Never Say Never Again.

After Bond, Connery continued to work regularly, finally winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1987’s The Untouchables. Even today, he and his career show no signs of slowing down. The Rock, Entrapment and Finding Forrester are just a few of his more recent hits.

“Everything I’ve done has had to be accomplished… with my own sweat,” Connery has said. “But if people hadn’t liked what I was doing, I’d probably be delivering milk today— and I never forget that.”
