Army sergeant xx was physically abused during his 5 year in Taliban captivity. After an escape attempt, he was hold at some point in a very small and closed space described as a cage or box, a senior US officer told CNN. 

 

One indicator of xx, a classified video of  xx made by the Taliban last December including xx where he is xxhis arm. xx is also suffering from psychological traumas, the official tells CNN. xx's captivity condition changes over time as Taliban loosened or tightened security around him. They also moved him frequently by avoiding detection by the US.

 

The top US military commander xx told xx, that xx is not yet being formally questioned. I wouldn't say he is actually being debriefed yet, what we are concentrating right now is his health. He's been a very tough place for a long time.

 

Sources say xx is psychologically stable enough to speak with his parents, but has not yet done so.

 

With the army openning a new review into what happen, the pentagon is getting more cautious in its public statements. We really have to get a chance to talk to sergeant xx before we can, you know, start pre-judge and speculate what, this specific captivity was like

 

Since the vietnam war POW's return, the military has run a program to evaluate the mental in physical effects of captivity on military personnel and found generally good news

 

They need to realize that there's life after being a POW, that most people bounce back, that bouncing back is largely a choice

Well, we in a way talking about the back up plan. What if it had all gone wrong when that helicopter came in, you still look at that video, you understand that they were doing that on 1 hour notice. We know now that right up until the last minute, they were still talking to the Taliban getting exact instructions where to go. The back up plan, what if it'd gone wrong, what if those talibans had started shooting. We know that there was surveillance aircraft overhead. They had eyes on every one of those Talibans. and those troops on the ground starting with those standing right next to the helicopter, were prepared, we were told fully prepared to engage in combat, grab xx and make a run for it. The proof of life video that you mentioned, that we've heard so much about, is that something might be made public. 

 

There is a lot discussion within the administration about doing it, they have shown it to the senators of course. It is classified at this time. I think one of the central questions is whether or not it is appropriate to show an American military member in captivity in very questionable circumstances of course, whether that is it exploit him to any accident, whether they want him to get better, whether there is a sensitive that would violate his privacy, that's what we begining to hear.
