前乐队成立于1998年，当时的吉他手 Danny Hartwell 和鼓手 Brandon Brown 在 Ratt Show on the Sunset Strip相遇。他们后来会见了当时的主唱 Judd Gruenbaum 。乐队前名是“Beyond Control”
前乐队组成后，引起了华纳兄弟的 Jeff Blue 的注意，他是那个发现 Linkin Park 的 A&R 执行负责人。后来他为这个乐队签署了一项发展协议，并从底特律找到了乐队的新主唱Jeff Gutt.
