Honeybees cannot live alone. Their body structure and instincts (本能) equip them for life in a colony or community, where they have a complex social organization and various duties are divided among the individuals according to physical fitness and age. An individual worker bee cannot reproduce itself. While it may continue to live if isolated from its mates, it fails to care for itself, and soon dies. Most insects have the ability to hibernate (冬眠) in winter, but the honeybee seems to have lost this. Since at low temperatures the bees will die, it must have the ability to make its own environment, so far as temperature is concerned. This makes a colony necessary to the bees in winter, so that they may warm each other. Efficiency, if not necessity, demands that the work of the colony be divided, and such a division of labor tends to enhance the need to maintain the colony. The physical structure of the honeybee is further suited for the defense of the entire colony rather than for its own defense. The bee’s barbed sting (倒刺) is used only once and is made more effective by the fact that it is left behind in the victim. With the loss of the sting, however, the bee dies. This kind of defensive weapon is not of service to the individual, but to the community.

Few people enjoy speaking in public. Most people will experience the following signs of stress: your pulse quickens; your face goes pale; your breathing becomes shallow. But you can be a great speaker if you know some techniques to calm yourself.

The best technique to calm yourself is to breathe deeply. Inhale (吸入) through your nose until your stomach can stick out no further and then exhale (呼出) through your mouth. Do this at least ten times and you will feel much better.

Arrive early and familiarize yourself with the room, the podium (讲坛), the A/V equipment and the seating arrangement. Stand at the podium and breathe deeply. There’s more good news for people who have friends. They live longer than people who don’t. Why? It could be that they are happier. Being happy helps you stay wellor it could be just knowing that someone cares. If someone cares about you, you take better care of yourself.

Mix with the audience as they arrive. Find out a few names and ask them why they have come. Chatting to them informally helps break the ice and will help remind you that your audience is made up of ordinary people like you and me.

Bring a photo of a child, spouse, pet with you and keep it where you can see it. Glance at it from time to time. If you are getting lost in your speech, look at it for 5 seconds and gather your thoughts. Remember that you are somebody’s hero.

Make eye contact with members of your audience. Look out for the friendly faces encouraging you to succeed. If you are too shy, connect with the empty chairs!

Smile warmly and act confidently and enthusiastically, even if you don’t initially feel that way. As you begin to relax, this will become less of an act.

41    The following signs of nervousness have been mentioned in this passage except         .

     A)    your pulse beats quickly

     B)   your face turns pale

     C)   you breathe hard

     D)   you sweat

42.   It helps you         to look at the pictures you bring with you.

A)   get lost in your speech

B)        remember the happy time of your past

C)   gather your thoughts

D)   stop the noise of the audience

43.   Of the six techniques to calm yourself the best one is         .

     A)   to smile warmly and act confidently and enthusiastically

     B)   to mix with the audience as they arrive

     C)   to arrive early and familiarize yourself with the surroundings

     D)   to breathe deeply

44. The phrase “break the ice” (Para. 4) probably means

     A)   cut the ice into pieces

B)   get people on friendly terms

C)   get to be happy

D)   melt the ice

45. The best title for this passage might be         .

A)   How to Calm Yourself When Speaking in Public

Task 3

Consumer satisfaction/dissatisfaction is determined by the overall feelings or attitude a person has about a product after it has been purchased. Consumers are engaged in a constant process of evaluating the things they buy as these products are integrated into their daily consumption activities.

What do consumers look for in products? They want quality and value. Especially because of foreign competition, claims of product quality have become crucial (至关紧要的) to maintaining a competitive advantage. Consumers use a number of cues to infer quality, including brand name, price, and even their estimates of how much money has been put into a new product’s advertisement campaign. These cues and others, such as product warranties (保单) and follow-up letters from the company, are often used by consumers to relieve noticed risk and assure themselves that they have made smart purchase decisions.

Consumer Satisfaction / Dissatisfaction

1.  Every consumer has   46   about a product after it has been purchased.

2.  Consumers want   47   in products.

Directions: Read the following passage. After reading it, you are required to complete the statements that follow (56 through 60). You should write your answers in no more than 3 words on the Answer Sheet correspondently.

Shopping from a catalogue is much more comfortable than shopping in person. Relaxing at home, catalogue customers can forget the pressures of traditional shopping. For one thing, a catalogue gets customers rid of the need for transportation to a department store and the problem of finding a parking space. More importantly, there is no shop assistant to press the catalogue shoppers into buying something they do not want. Best of all, if the customers do not find exactly what they have been looking for in the catalogue, they will not feel that they have wasted their time on a pointless journey; they will have spent perhaps fifteen minutes instead of a few hours, and their feet and legs will not be aching either. It is no wonder, therefore, that many people do their shopping at home.

56.   Please give a heading to the passage.

     Shopping                                                                                           .

57. If you shop from a catalogue, how about your transportation?

     No need                                                                                .

58. How much time will you spend on searching items from a catalogue?

     Perhaps                                                                                    .

59. What do you usually feel when you are persuaded to buy by a shop assistant in stores?

                                                                                           .

60. Why do many people prefer shopping at home?

Because shopping at home is much more comfortable than ____________________.
