A woman and her brother-in-law could never get along.

One day she said to him, "If you were my husband，I'd put poison in your juice?"

He replied, "If I were your husband, I'd drink that juice."

有个女人和她的小叔一直相处得不好。

"in law"是“在法律上”的意思，也就是说A若与B结婚，A的亲人就成了B法律上的亲戚。而非血缘上的亲戚， 所以对B而言，A的 brother就是B的brother-in-law；A的mother，就成了B的mother-in-law。依此类推。

有一天她对小叔说：“如果你是我丈夫，我会在你的果汁里放毒药。”

在这个句子中，if之后是虚拟语气，表示与现在事实相反的假设应用过去式，所以句中用you were及I'd(=I would),不论if后的主语是第几人称或单复数，be动同一律用were.如果If Tom were at home, I'd tell him.(如果汤姆在家，我会告诉他。），事实上汤姆并不在家。
