The benchmark Shanghai Composite rose above 5,000 today for the first time in more than seven years. 

After breaking through the 5,000 ceiling in the morning session, the benchmark index fell back but then firmed up in the afternoon. It closed the day at 5,024. 

Trading volume exceeded two-trillion yuan. Boosting the market today was a major release of cash back into the market... money that had been tied up in new IPO subscriptions.
